The Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) was formed in 1981 to be the professional and regulatory body for letting agents. It was seen that so detailed and specific were the requirements of the residential lettings market that a separate organisation was required to promote and monitor this growth sector of the property market.
The Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) is the only professional body that is solely concerned with the self regulation of letting agents and the important issues that affect the best practice of letting and renting in the private sector.
Before a letting agent is invited to join ARLA, the association satisfies itself through a rigorous application process that the agent and staff understand the business of letting and residential property management. ARLA also insist by annual audit that the member firm has professional indemnity insurance in place along with certification from an Independent Chartered Accountant that all client accounts are set up correctly and audited annually.
ARLA’s aim is to ensure that a framework of ethical standards and professionalism is maintained at a far higher level than the law demands. The skills of member firms and their staff are continually developed by ARLA seminars and training courses.

ARLA members are required to have a full understanding of the terms and provisions of successive Rent Acts, Housing Acts and of Contract Law.
